Tom Hardy to play Venom. What what???

Tom Hardy

Boy, those former DC stars sure are flocking to Marvel. First it was former Batman Michael Keaton playing The Vulture, then ex-Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum signed up for GotG Vol 2. Now, the man who was Bane is about to play Spider-Man’s greatest enemy Venom.

.

Yes, you read that right. The Hollywood Reporter says that Tom Hardy is in final negotiations with Sony for the role, with the movie to be directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer. And the studio seems to be in a hurry – it’s set to open on October 5, 2018. (Bet you they don’t make the deadline)

.

But it’s been Sony’s plan to create their own Spiderverse all along. Back in 2013, the studio hired several writers to work on Spider-Man spinoff movies. There was also a post-credits scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (see our review) that hinted at supervillain team Sinister Six. THR is reporting that Sony is proceeding with those plans, as well as a Silver Sable/Black Cat project – which appears to be the female superhero movie they had planned to make this year.

.

No wonder there’s been talk that Sony’s deal with Marvel to make Spider-Man movies ends after the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. It appears that Sony was only making Spidey available for rent while it recovered from the 2014 Sony hack and several big budget flops.

.

To give you more context – Venom, created in 1988, is a disgraced journalist named Eddie Brock. He becomes possessed by an alien symbiotic that had bonded with Spider-Man, giving him all of Spidey’s powers and more – not to mention the knowledge of his secret identity. He was played by (urgh) Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, to nobody’s satisfaction.

.

There have been multiple iterations of Venom in the comics since – including Peter Parker’s best friend Flash Thompson bonding with the symbiotic – but THR says Hardy will play Eddie Brock. While Hardy has not played a comic book movie role since Bane in The Dark Knight Returns, he has explored similar roles. The 39-year-old was reportedly set to appear in Suicide Squad before leaving the project, and has also said in the past that he would fancy playing Marvel’s The Punisher.

.

Given Hardy’s reputation for INTENSE roles, Venom certainly suits him. Now, the next question is: might Venom end up appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Our money’s on “No” – it’s pretty clear that Sony doesn’t want be beholden to Marvel. Though they may well sing a different tune if Homecoming and its sequel do well… .Is Tom Hardy a good fit to play Venom? Tell us!
