Tom Hanks’ ‘Sully’ Set for China Release in December

Warner Bros. has secured a Dec. 9 release date in China for Tom Hanks’ “Sully,” which has already topped $180 million in worldwide box office.

“Sully” stars Hanks as Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the career pilot who successfully landed a damaged U.S. Airways jet in the Hudson River in 2009 after it hit a flock of geese following takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. Clint Eastwood directed from a script by Todd Komarnicki, based on the autobiography “Highest Duty” by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow.

“Sully” has a production budget of about $60 million with Village Roadshow Pictures a co-producer and co-financer with Warner Bros. It has gone past $121 million domestically in seven weeks — making it the top fall movie so far — while its top international markets are Japan at $12 million and Australia nearly $10 million.

“Sully” will open in late November in France and in early December in Germany, Italy and the U.K. before it opens in China.

Hanks’ “Inferno” has already topped $100 million at the international box office in 64 markets for Sony and will open in the U.S., China, Japan and South Korea this weekend. News about the “Sully” opening in China was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
