Tom Hanks Is Writing a Book of Short Stories About Typewriters

In the most exciting bit of wish fulfillment since young Josh asked Zoltar for a growth spurt, typewriter enthusiastic and aspiring short fiction writer Tom Hanks has landed himself a book deal.

Hanks, who while not clanking away on his collection of little machines is an Oscar-winning actor and director, will write a volume of stories inspired by his large personal typewriter collection. The book will be put out by the publisher Alfred A. Knopf.

“The stories are not about the typewriters themselves, but rather the stories are something that might have been written on one of them,” said Hanks, who wrote this summer in the New York Times about his favorite composition machines and even launched his own iPad app that lets people pretend they’re typing on an antique machine.

This fall, Hanks published a short story in the New Yorker about a regular Joe’s adventures in a homemade rocket ship made with his buddies.
