Tom Cruise trained to be an astronaut, but the Columbia space shuttle crash put an end to the plans, according to reports.

Toni Myers, the director of Imax film ‘Space Station’, made in 2002 and which was narrated by the 'Mission: Impossible’ star, claims that Cruise was given a 'secret’ induction by NASA in Florida, and was taught how to space walk by wading in a water tank.

“Tom wanted to be an astronaut, he flies his own GulfStream IV Jet and he’s quite qualified as a pilot,” she told the Daily Mail.

“He was very enthusiastic about doing Space Station 3D but the deal was he also wanted to fly in the Space Shuttle.

“He had a very good chance of doing so but then the accident happened and that was the end of that.”

The space shuttle Columbia was returning from its 28th mission in space when it broke apart over Texas in 2003.

All seven crew members died.
