‘The Mummy’ is here… and she’s out for revenge.

It looks as though Tom Cruise is in well over his head, as he encounters the ancient Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) after unwittingly awakening the iconic movie monster from a millennia-long slumber. And after coming face-to-face with the supernatural Egyptian queen in this cool new image, he begins to realise that they’re more alike than he first thought…

After all, they’re both already dead.

“They’re finally face-to-face,” teased director Alex Kurtzman in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “He’s realizing that he’s deeply, and desperately, cursed.”

After awakening in a body bag after a plane crash, soldier Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) realises that something’s not quite right… and it seems that he and Ahmanet, who recently rose from a millennia-old sarcophagus, have something in common – they’re both cursed.

“[She’s] a woman who wasn’t content to be put in her place and wanted something more,” said Kurtzman. And it sounds as though The Mummy may have gotten a raw deal when she was first sealed in that ancient coffin.

After being promised the throne by her father, the Egyptian royal family turns on its young princess when the Pharoah eventually sires a son. And it looks as though things don’t exactly go well. After all, she ends up being bound in wrappings, sealed in a sarcophagus and buried alive.

And after all that, it’s no wonder she holds a grudge.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.”

“Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”

“From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”

Of course, ‘The Mummy’ also features the debut of Dr Jekyll (and Mr Hyde) played by none other than Russell Crowe. But it seems we shouldn’t expect to see more of Universal’s iconic monsters just yet.

“The movie’s called The Mummy, not The Mummy Meets 12 Other Monsters,” Kurtzman explained. “If we create a world that feels interesting and scary, then we will have succeeded in setting up the larger universe.”

‘The Mummy’ stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe.

Alex Kurtzman directed the film based on a script by Jon Spaihts and Christopher McQuarrie.

‘The Mummy’ heads to cinemas on 9 June 2017.
