Insomnia is a condition when you’re unable to sleep. It’s estimated that one in three people suffer mild symptoms of the illness. The causes range from anxiety, chronic pain, drugs/medicines, depression, stress and many more.

Unable to sleep at night means you’ll be suffering from tiredness throughout the day, which can impact your mood, social life and work productiveness. Fortunately, there are some ways to treat insomnia, to help you sleep again.

The first few considerations for those that suffer from insomnia is to take note of your sleeping schedules. If you want to get a good night’s sleep, you must schedule your sleeping time; for example, plan on sleeping from 10:30pm until 7am. Having a schedule will ensure your body can regulate a pattern of sleep.

A mistake often made by students or those who live in smaller apartments is laying in bed all day, whether it’s working on your laptop or watching your favourite TV show right before you sleep. Treating your bed as a sleep-only zone will also train your brain to understand this is a setting that you only sleep in.

When you drop the temperature in your room, you can trick your body into thinking it’s time to sleep. You can do this by taking a hot bath before bed or keeping your bedroom window open. Your brain signals to your body when the temperature drops that it is coming to the end of the day. This is because when the sun goes down, your body tends to get colder, indicating that your body should begin its preparation for sleep.

Exercising and keeping a healthy diet is a large factor in ensuring you get efficient sleep. By working out for an hour a day, whether that’s going for a run, using a skipping rope or something as calm as yoga, all play a part in treating our bodies like a temple. You’ll be burning off all the calories your body has been storing throughout the day, leaving you feeling less energised and ready to sleep.

While these are the main factors you should adapt to in your day-to-day lives, there are some products to help you beat insomnia.
