Tinder's most used emoji in 2020 revealed (and it sums up the year perfectly)

With multiple lockdowns and restrictions about household mixing, it’s safe to say it’s been an unprecedented year for dating.

Yet, according to Tinder’s new ‘Year in Swipe’ report, it seems singletons soldiered on.

The report says that messages and the use of the swipe feature was up double-digits this autumn compared to the end of February.

The dating app’s report has analysed the top 10 essential trends on Tinder for 2020 - and it has revealed that the most-used emoji on the app is a person shrugging (🤷🏽‍♀️), which pretty much sums up this year perfectly.

Other frequently-used emojis on the app this year included a black heart, a tiger, a person with a mask and toilet paper.

Top 10 trends on Tinder for 2020

  1. Support for Black Lives Matter became a must for many matches.

  2. Pandemic pick-up lines took over Tinder.

  3. TikTok x Tinder were a perfect match.

  4. Masks became a dating essential.

  5. Carole Baskin was 2020’s other temperature check.

  6. Tinder profiles were a creative way to get out the vote.

  7. Animal Crossing islands helped keep it flirty from 6 ft apart.

  8. Tinder was the place to share a collective 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏿‍♂🤷 at 2020.

  9. WAP brought unapologetic sex positivity to Tinder bios.

  10. Tinder ‘passport’ expanded dating horizons, travel bans notwithstanding.

The report also found that mentions of Black Lives Matter grew by 55 times in 2020, exceeding the use of the term ‘hook-up’ by the end of the year.

Of course, coronavirus was also a hot topic on the app as was Tiger King’s runaway star, Carole Baskin.

Trending pick-up lines included delights like: “What if we met up to watch the sunset….on my animal crossing island. Not kidding.” And, “Let’s be like covid and catch each other or Wash your hands so you can hold mine.”

The report also looked at the top trending songs of 2020 on the app, and found that Cardi B’s ‘WAP’ took the crown, closely followed by ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’ by Drake and ‘Rockstar’ by DaBaby.
