Following the disappointing release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, a concept artist has shared an image of what Jean Grey was meant to look like in the original ending.
Houston Sharp posted a couple of designs on Instagram of Sophie Turner’s antihero fiery look while “Blasting Off into Space.”
According to Sharp, the look was meant to feature in the final sequence but was changed a bit in the released film.”
Many of the cast members have discussed how the final movie’s ending had to be changed because of a conflict with another superhero movie.
“The finale HAD to change,” James McAvoy, who plays Professor X, told Yahoo Movies UK. “There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out... a while ago.”
“They had spies on set,” Michael Fassbender, returning for a fourth time as Erik “Magneto” Lensherr, “and [they] basically stole our ideas.”
“We were basically trawling through the source material it seems,” finishes McAvoy.
It seems the superhero movie they had a conflict with was Captain Marvel as Cyclops actor Tye Sheridan confirmed they had to cut Skrulls from the ending too.
“It’s really hard for me to remember what the ending of this movie is. [laughs],” Sheridan said. “Originally, it was scripted that Charles and Scott go to the U.N. because — man, I’m totally going to mess this up — they go to the U.N. because they’re going to try to tell the President that, ‘Hey, we’re under attack by aliens, and they’ve now captured Jean Grey.’ Or, you know, whatever it is that we’re going to tell him.
“And then Jean comes down in the front of the U.N., and causes… there is this huge battle between the guards at the U.N. and Jean Grey, and all the guards turn out to be Skrulls. And then Jean and Scott are — Scott is fighting Skrulls in the fountain.
“He gets thrown into the fountain in front of the U.N. And then Jean comes down and basically fights all of the Skrulls off, and then blasts back off into space. [She] basically says goodbye to Scott and Charles. And then it’s all over, I guess.”
“Blasts back off into space,” huh?
It’s believed that after Disney acquired Fox they forced the Dark Phoenix producers make the changes to the ending and the plot so it wouldn’t resemble Captain Marvel’s ending, confuse audiences about the Skrulls’ conflicting characterisation or have Jean looking the same as Carol when she’s in full, fiery Dark Phoenix mode.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is in cinemas now.
