6 things to know about Bonnie Chan’s fiancé, DJ Kuok Meng Jun

Second runner-up to Miss Hong Kong 2016 and ex-TVB actress Bonnie Chan recently announced her engagement on her Instagram. She shared a loving photo of her fiancé and wrote, "Said YES to the love of my life." It took some searching before people realised that the man pictured with her is Kuok Meng Jun, a DJ and music producer.

DJ Kuok is, however, more than just a music personality. He is reportedly the grandson of Malaysian billionaire Robert Kuok, who is the wealthiest man in the country. But, just who is DJ Kuok? Yahoo Lifestyle SEA digs into six things to know about the elusive man.

1. Billionaire Robert Kuok’s grandson

As the richest man in Malaysia, Robert Kuok’s net worth is estimated to be US$12.6 billion according to Forbes. Founder and Chairman of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Kuok also has investments in sugarcane plantations, sugar refineries, oil, mining, finance, property, trading, and more.

In 2007, Kuok combined some of his businesses such as his plantations, edible oil, and grains investments with Wilmar International, making it the world's biggest palm-oil processor. Wilmar continues to bring in the bulk of Kuok’s wealth ever since.

2. Stanford University Graduate

Graduated from Stanford University, DJ Kuok had majored in communications and digital media. Upon his graduation, the 32-year-old took up jobs in an advertising firm and his family’s real estate business before deciding to follow his passion for music. His family is reportedly supportive of him making music, although it has nothing to do with his major.

3. He is Singaporean

Despite his grandfather being a Malaysian billionaire, DJ Kuok is a Singaporean citizen. The 32-year-old confessed in a 2015 interview that he “used to frequent Zouk when he was serving his National Service”.

Despite studying in a boarding school in the United Kingdom since young, DJ Kuok had returned to Singapore to complete his National Service. After that, he went on to Stanford University in California for his tertiary education.

4. Singapore Idol alumni

Kuok had joined the third season of Singapore Idol and was a finalist on the 2009 show. He had made it into the finals by receiving the most votes during public voting after Piano Show 1. Kuok then requested to withdraw from the show, citing personal reasons. It was later revealed that Kuok had dropped out of the reality singing competition to finish his studies at Stanford.

5. From DJ MMXJ to DJ Kuok

Before he is DJ Kuok, he performed under the moniker of MMXJ, representing his and his older brothers Meng Xiong and Meng Wei’s initials.

In an interview with Read-a, Kuok said, “As MMXJ, I produced music for a lot of people and to make them happy. But my current music is very personal. I felt it apt to release it under my own name since I’m writing it as a form of catharsis, to let go of the hardships and challenges I went through.”

6. His music can be found on Spotify and Soundcloud

Setting up his own record label and talent agency Oceana Label in 2012 was a no-brainer; Kuok had shared in an interview that he wants to continue holding the “rights to my music and to keep going in the direction I’d like to go”.

According to the label’s official Soundcloud, Oceana Label is a record label, artist management team and music publisher based in Singapore. His music can also be found under MJ Kuok on Spotify.
