In the Chinese tradition, the giving of red packets or ang baos during Lunar New Year, from the married to the unmarried is very symbolic. As some families still practise this tradition, there are a few do’s and don’ts you should take note of.
Do give money in even auspicious numbers, and avoid the number four as it constitutes ‘death’
Avoid reusing red packets, especially with past years’ Chinese Zodiac designs. It just goes to show you have no ‘heart’ in giving blessings
Do not use white packets - white is the colour reserved in Chinese tradition for funerals
Don’t open the red packets n front of elders. That’s just rude
