The Power Rangers assemble in mighty first trailer

For people of a certain age, the ‘Power Rangers’ holds a very special place in their hearts.

Because of its past, Saban Films’ upcoming, big-screen reboot of the ‘Power Rangers’ franchise was always going to be looked at with a dose of scepticism, which is why it’s a relief that its first trailer is surprisingly so mighty.

This reimagining of ‘Power Rangers’ sees Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Billy (RJ Cyler), Trini (Becky G), and Zack (Ludi Lin) chosen by Zordon (Bryan Cranston) to become the new Power Rangers after their diminutive home town of Angel Grove, as well as the rest of the world, is threatened with extinction by Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).

Coming close to 20 years after the release of the last ‘Power Rangers’ film, 1997’s ‘Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie’, and with a $150 million budget, the blockbuster was always going to need to convince viewers with its footage.

The first ‘Power Rangers’ trailer does just that. Director Dean Israelite is clearly looking to replicate the spectacle of Michael Bay, the rapport and dynamic between the leading quintet already ooks impressive, with RJ Cyler especially excelling, Elizabeth Banks is always watchable, and that’s before we get a look at Bryan Cranston as Zordon or his robot assistant Alpha 5, who will be voiced by the downright hilarious Bill Hader.

We’ll have to wait until March 24, 2017, to see if ‘Power Rangers‘ can live up to this start. But, at the moment, it’s a case of so far so good.
