The 'Fantastic Four' Teaser Is Here! See the Torching, Teleporting, and Hints of Doom

"Be ready for what’s coming."

That’s the ominous warning Reed Richards, aka the pliable Mr. Fantastic, (Miles Teller) gets at the end of the first teaser for Fantastic Four, the new Marvel comic-book adaptation that will be hitting theaters on Aug. 7. The trailer opens with sweeping shots of a cityscape, majestic mountains, and a car racing through a cornfield (a joy ride callback to the Star Trek reboot?). The scenes are accompanied by a gravelly voiceover intoning, “Human beings have an immeasurable to desire to discover.”

Just how great is that desire? We get some high-tech hints with a glimpse of our crew entering the teleportation machine that will zoom them to another universe where they’ll acquire their superpowers — in a highly traumatic turn of events, by the looks of it. Before that though, we get flashes of our heroes in regular human form: Richards, Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, (Kate Mara), Ben Grimm, aka the Thing, (Jamie Bell), and Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, (Michael B. Jordan). We also spy a glimpse of Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathay), father to Johnny and Sue.

Among those we don’t see (at least not clearly): Toby Kebell as the villainous Doctor Doom, though he may be the narrator at the beginning and he could be the prone form in the hospital bed at the end.

The teaser is also careful about spoiling too much of the Fantastic fun, doling out only hints of the foursome’s fearsome new powers, including two shots of the Torch bursting into flames and another of the Thing pounding himself out of rock.

Fantastic Four reboots the origin story of the previous 2005 version of the superhero team starring Chris Evans and Jessica Alba. (A sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, followed in 2007.) The new version is directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle) who is working from a script by Jeremy Slater and X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg. Want to hear more from Trank and Kinberg?
