If ‘Suicide Squad’ were cast with Asian stars

We’ve been waiting for Suicide Squad for around two years now, since the movie was first officially announced back in 2014.

The movie finally premiered in cinemas on 4 Aug, and we couldn’t be more excited to meet the squad!

Directed by David Ayers, the film has teased us with new, colourful interpretations of our favourite DC characters.

And we couldn’t help but wonder: what if we had our own version of the film, recast with Asian actors and actresses?

Of course, the film has one cast member of Asian descent - namely Karen Fukuhara, who plays Tatsu Yamashiro, better known as Katana - so we’ll leave Katana out of this list.

And now, we present to you: our top picks for our Asian Suicide Squad dream team.

Deadshot

Floyd Lawton’s Deadshot has only more recently been portrayed as an antihero, and was more commonly depicted as one of the the most lethal supervillains in the DC comic universe. As his name suggests, he is an expert marksman and never misses a single shot.

You gotta admit, Arjun Rampal already looks a lot like Deadshot here in this scene from 2011’s Bollywood science fiction film Ra.One, where he plays the title villain. Rampal is one of Bollywood’s leading hunks, and we are pretty sure he can handle a gun just as well as Deadshot.

El Diablo

Jay Hernandez plays a former Los Angeles gang member, who has the spectacular powers of summoning huge bursts of fire. This rendition of El Diablo is a tortured soul, tormented by the horrors he has inflicted in the past.

With his suave looks and fiery, soulful gaze, Edison Chen is one of Hong Kong’s top actors, and also a talented singer and dancer.

Chen is also our shoo-in for the Asian Suicide Squad’s El Diablo; we feel he should inject his bad boy zest into El Diablo’s tortured soul.

All he needs now are a couple of face tattoos, a white singlet, and some massive flames at his disposal.

Boomerang

George “Digger” Harkness had a rough childhood in his homeland Australia, where he developed a knack for boomerangs.

After moving to America he was continually mocked, and thus turned to a life of crime as Captain Boomerang.

He uses ingeniously modified boomerangs (some of which are explosive, bladed, incendiary, or even electrical.)

Ananda Everingham is a popular Thai actor, who is of Laotian and (very fittingly) Australian descent.

You might remember him as the leading man Tun from the 2004 horror film, Shutter (anyone else remember that scene with the ghost girl sitting on his shoulders?)

With his dashing good looks and cool demeanour, we think Everingham could definitely take on Captain Boomerang’s role!

Enchantress

image

The nerdy June Moone stumbles upon a secret chamber while at a party, and is empowered by a magical being, Dzamor, causing June to turn into the Enchantress.

The comics have depicted her as both a villain and an antihero. It appears that David Ayers has given the Enchantress a voodoo spin in this movie as well, so we’re very eager to see how Cara Delevingne brings this character to life.

Joe Chen’s (Chen Qiao En) repertoire consists of her playing geeky characters in romance dramas, and on the extreme flip side, also nimble martial arts experts in big wuxia films like Swordsman (2013).

We couldn’t think of anyone better than Chen to play the two sides of the “Switcheroo-Witcheroo” - the mousy, wide-eyed June Moone, and the mysterious, turbulent Enchantress.

Slipknot

Christopher Weiss, or Slipknot, is an expert assassin who has harnessed a formula that turns ordinary rope into a near indestructible metal compound.

Takuya Kimura has acted since the ‘90s, and is one of the members of legendary J-pop idol group, SMAP.

Over the years, Kimura has had several signature roles, like playing a samurai in Love and Honour and a captain aboard the Space Battleship Yamato.

We feel Kimura is a great choice who can portray both the softer and also edgier sides of Slipknot!

Killer Croc

Waylon Jones was born with a rare genetic condition, which gives him hardened skin, regenerative abilities, superhuman strength, and a frighteningly crocodilian appearance.

He develops into an animalistic criminal with cannibalistic tendencies.

Killer Croc’s character requires an actor with a burly build, and we think Zheng Ge Ping is buff enough to play the part!

At the age of 52, Zheng is still incredibly (and enviably) ripped. He just has to put his mean face on, add a couple of scales, and voila - we’d have our Asian Killer Croc.

Rick Flag

Rick Flag is the all American soldier who bleeds red, white, and blue.

He commands the Suicide Squad and performs missions with them, while also acting as a warden for the convicts.

Daniel Henney has been successful both in Hollywood and in South Korea.

Do you remember Henney as Agent Zero in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Or perhaps you might remember his voice, as Tadashi in Big Hero 6?

He is also incredibly popular in South Korea, having played roles in hits like My Lovely Sam Soon and Seducing Mr Perfect).

With his sculpted cheekbones and mesmerising smile, we aren’t surprised! We also think he has what it takes to portray the straight-laced and very patriotic Rick Flag in our Asian Suicide Squad.

Harley Quinn

Harleen Quinzel was a mild-mannered psychiatric intern, up until she got dealt with a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome and fell madly in love with the Joker himself (who was under her care).

Angel Locsin is a Filipina television and film actress who has been in showbiz for more than a decade.

With her intense gaze and playfully sultry smirk, we truly think she has what it takes to play the incredible Harley Quinn!

Plus, she very recently dyed her hair blonde (check her new do out on her Instagram page @therealangellocsin) - which convinces us all the more that she is the perfect Harley Quinn for our Asian Suicide Squad!

BONUS: The Joker

Jared Leto as the Joker. (Photo: Warner Bros)

Leto’s version of The Clown Prince Of Crime is miles apart from the character’s earlier interpretations.

This Joker is much more colourful and flashy, and at the same time also seems to be that much more deadly.

Leto has big shoes to fill, following Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger’s timeless incarnations of the Joker - will this new Joker live up to his hype?

If there is one person in Asian showbiz who knows a thing or two about being colourful and flashy, it’s G-Dragon.

With his boyish charm and impeccable style, G-Dragon has captured the hearts of millions around Asia and the globe.

This K-pop idol already has the eyeliner and tattoos, with a spunky attitude and haunting stare to boot.

Now all he needs is the Joker’s signature white face paint and green hair (which we know he has very successfully pulled off before!) We can totally see this happening!
