The 3D Jason Bourne Is Making Audiences In China Violently Sick

Couple Paul Greengrass’s trademark shaky, handheld camera work with 3D added in post-production, and you get audiences running for the exits.

A special 3D version of ‘Jason Bourne’ was created as an ‘exclusive’ for the Chinese market, but it’s now making movie-goers physically sick.

The Matt Damon actioner opened in China this week, and despite a healthy $11.8 million in the bank in a single day, the overriding issue has been the complaints over the nausea the film is causing.

Reports have suggested that it’s made audiences ‘dizzy and uncomfortable’.

According to Quartz, one screening attendee blogged on the Chinese social media site Weibo: “There were a line of people throwing up in the restroom of the cinema I went to yesterday… I’m not exaggerating (sic).”

Meanwhile, a story in the Chinese newspaper Global Times reports that cinema-goers organised a protest at a theatre in the Chaoyang district of Beijing yesterday, demanding refunds.

One movie fan Zhou Yuchen said: “The 3D version is a rip-off. It’s been happening many times in China and must be stopped.”

3D has been a huge market in China ever since the ground-breaking ‘Avatar’ arrived in the country in 2007.

As such, many films are converted to 3D, with premiums then being added onto ticket price.

According to reports in the Beijing News, one cinema was charging nearly 25% more on the ticket price to watch the 3D conversion.

Another blogger added: “Please don’t offer 3D just to grab money anymore. Chinese people are not stupid, we can vote with our feet and money.”

Other movies such as ‘2012’, ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Looper’ and Johnny Depp flop ‘Transcendence’ are among those given 3D treatment solely for the Chinese market.
