The 10 Most Entertaining Movie Memes of 2015

Every good movie deserves its own meme, and this year, films ranging from Jurassic World to Mad Max: Fury Road got the viral treatment. But even older movies can generate new laughs. Look for appearances from Rocky, Pulp Fiction, Mean Girls, and Clueless as we revisit 2015’s ten funniest movie memes.

Confused Travolta

A lost-looking John Travolta, clipped from a Pulp Fiction scene, popped up everywhere this fall — including the halls of The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, a classic A-ha video, Return of the Jedi’s ghost line-up, the art of MC Escher, and the haunted Ghostbusters library (above).

Shia LaBeouf at the Movies

In November, the actor-turned-performance-artist debuted his most entertaining art project yet: A live video feed of LaBeouf watching a three-day marathon of his own films at a downtown NYC theater. The world tuned in, made GIFs, tweeted updates, and related deeply to LaBeouf watching Transformers 2 (above).

Prattkeeping

Jurassic World was the year’s #1 film, and seems to have particularly resonated with zookeepers. In June, animal wranglers from zoos, aquariums, and safaris around the world began posting delightful photos of themselves mimicking Christ Pratt’s raptor-training stance from the film. Judging from the pics, “Prattkeeping” is effective on every species from white rhinos to rheas (above) to teenagers.

“It’s true. All of it.”

Harrison Ford’s big line from the Force Awakens trailer was a gift to fans, who swooned at former skeptic Han Solo acknowledging the power of the Force. It also provided great meme fodder, generating Star Wars-themed jokes about midi-chlorians, the “Han shot first” controversy, and of course, that regrettable Luke-and-Leia kiss (above).

My Desires Are Unconventional

“My tastes are very… singular,” sadomasochism enthusiast Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) tells the wide-eyed Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) in the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer, to which she replies, “Enlighten me.” By the time the movie hit theaters, that moment (albeit with some tweaked wording) had taken on a life of its own, with Christian’s “unconventional” taste encompassing everything from interpretative dance to an ironing dog (above).

“Tell me, do you bleed?”

Any superhero film that takes itself as seriously Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is cruising for a meme-ing. When Batman (Ben Affleck) asked Superman (Henry Cavill) “Do you bleed?” in the film’s April trailer, the internet had plenty of snappy replies.

Feminist Mad Max

Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the year’s best, and most unexpectedly feminist, movies. In tribute to George Miller’s film and its heroine Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a Tumblr user created the Feminist Mad Max meme — like Feminist Ryan Gosling, but with awesome post-apocalyptic vehicles.

Pope Francis as Rocky

When the super-popular Pontiff paid a rare visit to Philadelphia this September, this Rocky-themed Vine captured the city’s enthusiasm like nothing else could.

Netflix and Chill

The year’s most popular new catchphrase is a synonym for hooking up, but its dual meaning resulted in lots of inter-generational awkwardness and a whole lot of memes. The Clueless one (above) says it all.

Hot Harrison Ford

Apparently, the world had forgotten that Harrison Ford used to be young, until they saw him return to the role of Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This year, the internet was awash in photos of Ford (now 73) from his glory days, whether he was doing dishes, hanging out shirtless on the Return of the Jedi set, or being a scruffy-looking carpenter in 1970 (above).
