'Tears of joy' as Calbee's pizza-flavoured potato chips return to shelves in Japan

Earlier this year, famous Japanese potato chips brand Calbee had to halt production of some of its products due to shortages in Hokkaido potatoes caused by the typhoons.

This led to prices of potato chips in Japan skyrocketing before the company found an alternative source of potatoes from Kyushu.

And so begins the good news. Among the 15 types of products stopped, three — which include the popular pizza-flavoured potato chips — have resumed sales from 19 June 2017. The other two products are black pepper-flavoured potato chips and honey butter-flavoured potato chips.

The pizza-flavoured potato chips made their way back to the shelves from Monday (19 June) in Northern and Eastern Japan, and will start appearing in Central and Western Japan from 26 June. The black pepper-flavoured potato chips and honey butter-flavoured potato chips also resumed sales from Monday.

The resumption of the near-sacred potato chips was promptly met with cries of joys, unsurprising given the tears of despair during the potato-calypse that almost was.

Calbee said it received over 1,000 pieces of feedback during the two months when production was halted, with most comments hoping and begging for the brand to resume making chips.

Shuji Ito, Calbee’s president, had even said in a press release, “During the period when sales have stopped, we have received many deep-felt words of encouragement from our customers. It is heartening to hear such feedback, and this has made us once again feel that our products are well-loved by many customers.”

In response to the resuming of sales for the pizza-flavoured potato chips and other products, delighted voices echoed in social media sites like Twitter:
