The team behind "Insidious" is working on a robotic killer doll movie

19 Jul – There's a new techno horror thriller in the making and it has two big names involved in it, so things are definitely not looking grim for the project.
The movie will see the team-up of renowned horror auteur James Wan, known for hits like "Saw", "Insidious" and "The Conjuring", with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, which has created some of the most well-known horror franchises like "Paranormal Activity", "The Purge" and, again, "Insidious".
The Hollywood Reporter brought news on the team-up, revealing that the movie follows a life-like doll called M3GAN developed by a brilliant toy company roboticist. When the roboticist's niece becomes orphaned, she programs the doll to emotionally bond with her niece.
However, the programming works too well, leading to the doll becoming overprotective and willing to do anything to protect the niece, even if it results in horrifying consequences.
"Pretty much the concept is about embracing technology too much and relying too much on it," said Wan.
"And what happens with technology runs amok. It's a commentary on the world we live in and it feels relevant."
The script for "M3GAN" is penned by "American Horror Story" writer, Akela Cooper.
Wan and Blum have previously worked together on 2011's "Insidious" and 2013's "Insidious: Chapter 2", directed by the former and produced by the latter's company. Wan also continued to produce the rest of the movies in the "Insidious" franchise.
Wan will not be directing as Gerard Johnstone ("Housebound") will be the one helming the project, which is said to have a touch of black humour.
Blum stated, in regard of picking the New Zealand director for the job, "We needed someone who can do the thrills and set pieces, but who also has a cheeky approach."
"M3GAN" is set to begin filming this fall.
In the meantime, Wan is busy with his movies "Aquaman" and "The Nun", both releasing this year, while Blum's schedules are occupied by the "Halloween" reboot and M. Night Shyamalan's "Glass", opening in cinemas this October and in January next year, respectively.
