Cameras are now rolling on the long-in-gestation Elton John film, and Taron Egerton has dropped a first glimpse from the set to fans.

In a shadow on the ground, the Kingsman star appears, wings outstretched in a circle, wearing one of the pop legend’s legendarily outlandish outfits.

Egerton is playing Sir Elton in Rocketman, being helmed by Dexter Fletcher, who, to continue the bird theme from the picture, also directed the 28-year-old actor in the biopic Eddie The Eagle.

It’s been scripted by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall, but biopic is a word that the filmmakers are markedly not using.

In May, Egerton explained to Collider: “We are making a movie called Rocketman about Elton John’s formative years. Everyone thinks it’s a biopic. It isn’t.

“It’s a fantasy musical so it’s actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments. He’s not the only character that sings. It’s going to be fun.”

As for singing, he going to ‘do it all’, he added.

“I’m going to do it on set as well. We’re going to use a variety of techniques but I will always be singing on set. No miming. I’m just not interested in doing it that way.”

Egerton has already shown that he has some pretty solid singing chops, and Elton-based ones too.

He sang the Elton John classic I’m Still Standing in the movie Sing, when he voiced Johnny, the teenage gorilla with dreams of becoming a pop star.

The movie is due out on May 17, 2019.

Meanwhile, Egerton is next up in the new reboot of Robin Hood, alongside Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn, Tim Minchin and Jamie Dornan.

It’s out in November.
