Tarantino called on lack of diversity in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

The latest casting announcement for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood appears to have been the last straw for some movie fans.

Scoot McNairy has just been added to the bill for the movie about LA in the era of the Manson Family murders.

He’ll play a TV cowboy by the name of Business Bob Gilbert.

However it’s been noted that with the addition of McNairy, Tarantino’s cast so far, other than Keith Jefferson, is almost exclusively made up of white actors.

He joins Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Dakota Fanning, Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Emile Hirsch, Clifton Collins Jr, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Nicholas Hammond.

Writer and academic Nancy Wang Yuen noted:

The full cast has not been detailed, and there will surely be some actors of colour involved, but indeed, in the era of inclusion riders, Tarantino’s players are hardly an advert for diversity.

Tarantino has championed black actors many times in the past, however, and is noted for his continued work with Samuel L. Jackson.

He tackled race and slavery head on in Django Unchained too, and in Pam Grier, placed a black female actress at the centre of Jackie Brown.

He also cast a host of Asian actors in his Kill Bill movies.

But it’s not the first time that Tarantino has been called out for his casting choices on this latest project.

He’s already been slammed for adding Emile Hirsch to the cast-list.

Hirsch was sentenced to 15 days in jail in 2015 for the brutal assault of movie executive Daniele Bernfeld, choking her at a nightclub during the Sundance Film Festival that same year.
