The countdown is on for the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child, expected in April. While there’s been speculation over which hospital Meghan will give birth in and the child’s gender, there’s also been questions about what title he or she will have. If you thought the royal baby would be a prince or princess like their cousins George, Charlotte and Louis, think again. Provisions in history, made by the Queen's grandfather King George V limit titles within the Royal Family. The 1917 Letters Patent stated: “…the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.” While the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first born George was always set to be a prince (as he is the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales), their younger children Charlotte and Louis would have been a lady and a lord. But luckily, the Queen stepped in to give all of their children HRH titles. Unless Her Majesty does the same for Meghan and Harry's child, he or she will be a lord or lady.
