    South Korean artiste T.O.P, a member of popular K-pop group BIGBANG, on Thursday (20 July) received a 10-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, for smoking marijuana. T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, received a lighter jail sentence as per the prosecution’s request during his first court hearing on 29 June.     Prosecution seeks two years' probation for BIGBANG'S T.O.P for illegal drug use

    On Thursday (29 June) at 11.30am KST, South Korean artiste T.O.P, member of popular K-pop group BIGBANG, attended his first court hearing for illegal drug use at a Seoul district court at Seocho-gu. During the trial, the prosecution sought a two-year probation for T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, with a 10-month prison sentence if he violates his probationary sentence. According to Yonhap News, T.O.P pleaded guilty to all charges, and also appealed for a lighter jail sentence.

    BIGBANG's T.O.P will head to court on 29 June over drug charge: reports

    The singer and actor from boy group BIGBANG had been charged for the illegal consumption of marijuana in October 2016. According to KBS News on Wednesday (7 June), South Korea’s Seoul Central Court announced that T.O.P’s first court hearing by head judge Kim Ji-chul will take place at 11.30am Korea time. The announcement of the court hearing came a few hours after a media briefing was held at the hospital about T.O.P’s health condition.

    BIGBANG’s T.O.P has reportedly been hospitalised in the intensive care unit (ICU) after he overdosed on drugs, according to media reports. Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday (6 June), citing the South Korean boy group’s record company, YG Entertainment, saying that the singer and actor had overdosed on tranquilisers. The South Korean military announced on Monday (5 June) that T.O.P would be expelled from the army after being formally charged for using marijuana in October 2016.
