This is because the film is based on a book called ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, itself a sequel to ‘The Detective’ by Roderick Thorp. ‘The Detective’ was adapted into a movie in 1968 with Ol’ Blue Eyes and there was a clause in his contract which said he had first refusal on playing the character in a follow-up.
