On the 22nd October, we’re going to see the first episodes of Class, a new Doctor Who spinoff set at Coal Hill School, featuring a cast of brand new characters and described as akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the ‘Whoniverse’. Peter Capaldi will be making a guest appearance in the first episode of this eight-part series. Don’t expect him to stick around, though – as Patrick Ness said during the panel, Class is “about what happens to the people when the Doctor is done with his adventure.” This trailer also hints at what will presumably be one of the overarching ideas of the series – a rift in time, caused by the Doctor’s frequent comings and goings, which may well act in a similar capacity to Buffy’s Hellmouth.
In about a month’s time, we’re going to see the first new Doctor Who spinoff since the end of Torchwood: Miracle Day in 2011 – Class, set at Coal Hill School, featuring a group of emerging actors, and most notably, written and overseen by popular YA author Patrick Ness. It started around two years or so ago, with a refusal: Patrick Ness was asked to write an episode of Doctor Who, but declined, on the basis that he was writing a lot for other people, and wanted to devote more time to his own projects. Which is, in fact, rather fantastic, because Patrick Ness is the perfect candidate for this series.
Earlier today, the Radio Times revealed that filming for the new Doctor Who spinoff, entitled Class, will begin filming in April, for a release on BBC Three later this year. It’s also been revealed that Peter Capaldi will guest star in the series; all in all, it’s some very exciting news.
Described as being akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the Whoniverse, this spinoff series has just begun filming, and is set to be released later this year on BBC Three, with another broadcast on BBC One shortly afterwards. It’s an eight part series, written by esteemed YA author Patrick Ness, and will also feature a guest appearance by Peter Capaldi. Today we’ve had our first official news about the project since it’s first announcement, including some teasing details from Patrick Ness, as well as information about the cast themselves.
