Since its opening night 90 years ago, the Academy Awards red carpet has become one of the most style-watched events of its time. Who could forget Nicole Kidman in an off-beat chartreuse couture dress that dazzled onlookers in 1997 — or Halle Berry, who filled us with body-envy donning a sheer-panel floral gown back in 2002? Throughout the years, the Oscars has offered an abundance of striking fashion moments, but only handful of gowns truly stand the test of time. To celebrate Hollywood’s biggest night in film and fashion, we’re taking a look at 10 dresses we’ll never forget from the red carpet. This week, the ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ worldwide premiere took place right in our capital. And, naturally, that meant a slew of sartorially savvy men and women posing up a storm on the red carpet and displaying their fashion prowess (or lack thereof). Katie Piper, model Jourdan Dunn and Kylie Minogue all looked, for want of a better word, fabulous while Abbey Clancy missed the mark in an edgy choice that wasn’t to the star’s usual taste. In other fashion news, Kim Kardashian showed off a little too much at a magazine party; Anna Kendrick stunned at the premiere of her new film and Gemma Arterton looked flawless at Wimbledon.
The 69th Cannes Film Festival officially starts today, and while it’s a film festival, it’s also a glamour fest. No other gathering has quite the same red-carpet ‘oomph,’ whether Angelina Jolie arrives in nude Versace gown or Penelope Cruz has on a strapless red Lanvin dress. To mark this year’s event, Yahoo Style looks back at the best looks from past years. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest for nonstop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day

When it comes to red carpet dressing, Cate Blanchett loves to take risks—something she made all the more clear on the press junket circuit while promoting her latest film, Truth. At a recent screening in Los Angeles, the Oscar-winning Aussie chose a white knit Proenza Schouler dress with a high neck and bare shoulders, fresh off the New York runway—paired with crisscrossed Louboutin pumps, an easy updo, and glowing makeup. But she wasn’t the only star with an eye for Proenza this week: Fargo’s leading lady, Kirsten Dunst, showed up to the Season 2 premiere of the hit FX show wearing a sleeveless, olive green leather dress with ruffled hem, also by the label. From Zendaya’s sleek, minimalist Elizabeth and James dress to Lily-Rose Depp’s shoulder-baring, technicolor Chanel top, here are the rest of this week’s best dressed.
While the fashion crowd flocks to New York to flaunt their best fall looks for the start of the Spring 2016 women’s collection, other fabulous types were making a splash all over the world. Elizabeth Olsen, Mary-Kate and Ashley’s little sister arrived to the premiere of Ruth and Alex at the 41st Deauville American Film Festival looking angelic in a white short sleeve gown from Calvin Klein Collection. Natalie Portman embraced her inner goddess in a flesh-tone lace one-shoulder Lanvin gown while attending the premiere of A Tale Of Love And Darkness at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival. From Victoria Beckham’s showing off her perfectly toned bod in her own label’s LBD to Irina Shayk’s white Versace power suit, here’s a look at this week’s best dressed.

She particularly shined at the New York premiere in a silver embellished cutout dress by Saint Laurent. Katie Holmes was also seen in the Big Apple wearing a metallic silver long-sleeved top paired with pleated leather culottes by Zac Zac Posen. The designer was also represented this week at the dinner he cohosted this week with Yahoo Style for the women of "Pixels." The film's star, Michelle Monaghan, rocked a bright red-orange short suit of his making.
After a long weekend of red, white and blues, this week’s best dressed are having a bit of a black-and-white moment. Actress Amber Heard attended the Buglari cocktail party in Paris in a figure-hugging LBD from Temperley London and topped off the look with one of Bulgari’s signature serpent sparklers. Emily Blunt arrived to Raf Simon’s Dior Couture show in an exquisite white dress, while Naomi Watts looked simply divine in a white lace halter neck dress from Giorgio Armani at the Armani Privé runway show.
The Fourth of July weekend was steaming hot, which means that stylish celebs could pare down to their skimpiest outfits for the holiday weekend. There was Gigi Hadid in a red leotard and ripped blue jeans, Candice Huffine in distressed denim cutoffs, and Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus going fully patriotic in sequined stars and stripes. Take a look at your favorite celebs donning red, white, and blue.
Among them was Selena Gomez who was spotted in New York City wearing a Balmain crop top and high-waist black trousers while promoting her newest single Good For You. The actress brought some edginess to the premiere of Ted 2 in New York in a sleek LBD and braids inspired by cornrows.
On a recently trip to New York, Jessica Alba ditched her signature off-duty look of boyfriend jeans and fedoras for a bright orange Roksanda dress and Bionda Castana heels. While Alba looked fabulous in her citrus dress, actress Taylor Schilling turned up the heat in a red hot Cuschine et Ochs cutout dress from the Pre-Fall collection. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldana combined the shades in a color-blocked frock from Tanya Taylor. Check out the rest of this week’s best dressed.
This week was black, white, and red all over. Felicity Jones continues to stun on her press tour for The Theory of Everything; she wore white Dior couture. Diane Kruger looked like a snow princess in Chanel couture, and Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, and Taylor Swift all showed off shades of red.
