Ta-Nehisi Coates to Write New ‘Superman’ Film for DC And Warner Bros

Ta-Nehisi Coates has been tapped to write the script for a new “Superman” film for DC and Warner Bros., according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

J.J. Abrams will produce under his Bad Robot label and Hannah Minghella will serve as producer.

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates said in a statement to Shadow and Act, which first reported the news. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity,” Abrams added.

“Ta-Nehisi Coates’ ‘Between the World and Me’ opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world,” Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said. “We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”

Plot details are being kept under wraps, and no director is currently attached. It is also unclear if Henry Cavill will return to the titular role. The British actor first appeared as the iconic superhero in 2013’s “Man of Steel,” followed by “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016 and “Justice League” in 2017. He was set for further appearances in DC Comics movies, including a planned cameo in “Shazam!,” but was instead let go from the job in 2018.

An acclaimed author, essayist, journalist and writer, Coates is no stranger to comic book superheroes, as he previously penned issues of “Black Panther” and “Captain America” for Marvel. His run on “Black Panther” is what ultimately convinced former Disney chief Bob Iger to greenlight the historic “Black Panther” movie starring Chadwick Boseman. On the publishing side, Coates is the author of bestsellers including “Between the World and Me,” which won the National Book Award in 2015, “The Beautiful Struggle,” “We Were Eight Years in Power” and “The Water Dancer.”

Ta-Nehisi Coates is repped by UTA.
