Listen up - Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd is staging in Singapore for the first time ever! One of the greatest musicals of all time, this delicious tale of love and vengeance is the creative genius you don’t want to miss out on. And if you haven’t started booking your tickets already, here are 5 reasons why you should:
1. It’s a Love Story
Wait, what? If you thought Sweeney Todd was all about gore and blood, it’s not! The tragedy of Sweeney started with love: the love between Benjamin Barker and his wife, the one sided love between Mrs Lovett and Sweeney and the young love between Anthony and Johanna. This is the infamous tale of an unjustly accused barber who returns from exile seeking vengeance against the lecherous Judge Turpin who framed him. The road to revenge leads to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has people lining up. And that’s just the beginning of the carnage!
2. Staging for the Very First Time in Singapore
2019 celebrates the 40th anniversary of this award-winning musical and its first ever showcase on the red dot in November. With 8 Tony Awards under its belt, including Best Musical, rest assured Sweeney Todd is as delicious as it is spectacular!
Brought to you by the Singapore Repertory Theatre, the musical will stage at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands starting November and promises to be one of the greatest performances to mark the end of the year! Yes, we’d get those tickets pronto.
3, 4 & 5. Lea Salonga, Jett Pangan and Stephen Sondheim!
Tony and Olivier Award-winning actress Lea Salonga (of Miss Saigon fame!) returns to Singapore as Mrs Lovett. Also, featuring Rock Icon, Jett Pangan as the titular character in this thrilling spectacle, Sweeney Todd is all set to enthral. If that’s not enough, Sweeney Todd has been written and composed by the legendary Stephen Sondheim - winner of an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, eight Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and a Laurence Olivier Award. Some of his best known works include West Side Story, Company, Pacific Overtures, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods.
