Superman Henry Cavill Offers His Reason For Man Of Steel's Mass Destruction

‘Man of Steel’ was a controversial reboot of the Superman license, not least because of its finale - which provided a double dose of contentious issues superhero fans have been debating ever since.

The finale sees the battle between Henry Cavill’s Supes and Michael Shannon’s General Zod level most of Metropolis, killing thousands, before the Man of Steel kills his foe - flying in the face of one of the character’s defining traits.

Superman killing is said to fuel his desire to avoid death at all costs in the future, but what of the mass destruction left in his wake? Well, Henry Cavill has some thoughts on that.

“I think that may have been [the filmmakers’] master plan all along,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “When it comes to the major story stuff I can’t really speak on that, because that was above my paygrade.

"What I can speak of is the idea of Superman, especially when the finger is pointed at collateral damage in the first movie. I mean, we’re talking about a greenhorn. Let’s say now, [if] Superman has the same threat again, that’s a different story.

"He would, of course, bring collateral damage to an absolute minimum, but in that, he’s just trying to survive because if he doesn’t, the planet’s gone. That’s the excuse I make for Superman. He’s fresh and he’s new, and it’s very easy to point out the faults in someone after they’ve done it, but put yourself in their shoes and see what happens.”

The desturction of Metropolis will feature heavily in upcoming sequel 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. Ben Affleck’s Batman, aka Bruce Wayne, witnessed the destruction first hand and as a result he vows to take on Superman, who he deems to be a threat to Earth.

The two will come to blows when 'Batman v Superman’ is released on 25 March.
