Super Mario Maker was one of-if not the best-thing to came out of the Wii U era. Now, it's back and better than ever on the vastly superior Nintendo Switch. During Wednesday evening's Nintendo Direct, we got our first major look at the sequel, Super Mario Maker 2, which features a wealth of new tools, a fixed and in-depth online course hub, a story mode, new game styles, a funky Night system, and most excitingly, an online multiplayer mode.

The Direct started off showing a shit-ton of new tools; check out the Direct for the full list, but some of the most exciting were sloping, a customizable auto-scroll, parachutes, clear conditions, a new dry bones shell with some neat new features, and everyone's favorite pissed-off sun from Mario 3. Along with the tool announcements came some new themes: Desert, Snow, Forest, and Sky, all of which feature original music from gaming industry legend Koji Kondo, the father of all Super Mario Bros. soundtracks.

A Moon feature was announced alongside that asshole sun. The moon adds a Night mode to the themes, causing zany effects in each. In one theme, the goombas float. Another has you playing upside-down, while a third turns all the water to poison. Not all the Night mode features were revealed, but needless to say, it looked pretty cool.

A new game style was also revealed with tools, obstacles, and power-ups from the sorely missed Super Mario 3D World, like explanation blocks, Cat Bowser, a Koopa Kart, and a ton more. This mode will force you to start from scratch, since the gameplay is extremely different. The Direct also showed off a story mode that follows Mario as he attempts to rebuild Princess Peach's castle, with over 100 courses designed by Nintendo to help spark some creativity in the player. The story mode appears to be fairly in-depth, including wacky side characters and missions, and more.

The biggest announcement, however, came in the form of an amazing-looking online multiplayer mode, which allows four players to duke it out in versus or cooperate to best a level. It seems hectic-but also like an absolute blast.

One feature that Nintendo didn't touched on yet was the amiibo costumes, a fan favorite from the original game that allowed special mushrooms to turn Mario into the likes of Wario, Pac Man, and even Sonic, along with a ton more. Whether this will be in the full game or not is unknown, but fingers crossed that it returns, so I can use my Solaire of Astora amiibo.

Super Mario Maker 2 launches on June 28 for $59.99. Switch Online members can also purchase a “Game Voucher” pack for $99.99, which gives access to two full-priced games, saving you roughly 20 bucks. Nice.
