Suicide Squad Opens To Huge $135 Million, Then Drops Off Steeply

The unfortunate similarities between DC’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ continue to rack up.

David Ayer’s multi-villain actioner launched to an impressive $65.1 million (£49 million) in the US on Friday, and much like BvS, before dropping substantially – to the tune of 41% – on Saturday night.

Where analysts thought it was heading for as much as $150 million, it fell short, matching the steep drop off suffered by ‘The Dark Knight’, which also dropped 41%, but the opening of which was affected by the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

Including its overseas haul, the movie has made $267.1 million (£204 million), however, making it the second highest-opening DC superhero movie.

Like ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, ‘Suicide Squad’ has also been hammered by critics, with the movie getting a 26% ‘fresh’ rating on reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, compared to BvS’s 27%.

Whether the poor reviews of the movie have hampered attendances is hard to quantify, but it likely hasn’t helped matters.

Many remarked that it failed to live up to the dizzying, irreverent action seen in its trailers, and that the plot was too thin to maintain interest.

Meanwhile, reports from insiders on the set of the movie in The Hollywood Reporter painted a picture of an ‘anxiety-riddled’ shoot, with Warner Bros putting together its own rival cut of the film.

Another source suggested that the movie will have to make in excess of $750 million (£575 million) in order to break even, after production and marketing costs, and even more to be considered a box office success.

The movie, starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, it’s out now across the UK.
