On May 21, people around the country protested six new restrictive abortion bans, taking to the streets and to social media with the hashtag #StopTheBans. The largest protest took place infront of the Supreme Court building in Washington D.C., where a number of politicians and 2020 presidential candidates (like Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg) took turns addressing the crowds, advocating for better reproductive rights.

"This is the beginning of President Trump's war on women," Gillibrand said at the D.C. rally, NPR reports. "If he wants this war, he will have this war, and he will lose."

Pro-choice supporters were emboldened after Alabama passed a bill last week (which Governor Kay Ivey signed into law) banning nearly all forms of abortion in the state with no exceptions for rape or incest. It also makes the procedure a felony for doctors, who could face up to 99 years in prison.

Alabama is one of six states that recently passed strict anti-abortion legislation. Days later, Missouri passed a bill banning the procedure at around eight weeks of pregnancy, with no exclusions for rape or incest. Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio recently passed "heartbeat laws," meanwhile Utah and Arkansas are voting on how late abortions should take place during a pregnancy, The New York Times reports.

Fueled by the wave of conservative bills challenging Roe v. Wade, which protects a woman's right to choose, protestors made their voices heard with rallies in the nation's capital and beyond. Demonstrations also bubbled up in Georgia, New York, Ohio, California, and even Alaska. Below are some highlights from the rallies across the country.

Attended a @ppact rally today in Ann Arbor to organize people around reproductive rights and access to care. @cecilerichards spoke and a multitude of black, brown, trans folx. It was a relief to see in a crowd of mostly white women. There were a handful of men, most of them there with women, most of them too old to likely be affected by the #abortionban. ⁣ ⁣ My question is: where are all the men right now? Why are you all silent? How does having unwanted children not affect you? Are you all still so steeped in patriarchy that spending time organizing and challenging this seems unnecessary to you? ⁣ Because I’m here to tell you unplanned/unwanted pregnancies will dramatically change your lives as well. We womxn might not have a majority in our legislative bodies now, but when we do- you all will be held equally responsible and shoulder an equal share of the burden if somehow all women’s autonomy in this country is revoked. ⁣ Don’t wait for us to change things. Be there with us, support us, talk to your communities, be an ally or better yet an accomplice. Educate yourselves on patriarchy and feminism. Read some books, sign up for feminist newsletters, show up to rallies, donate to orgs, and funds supporting womxn that don’t have the funds or the access right now to obtain abortions (it’s already very complicated in many states). If you can get a vasectomy GET A VASECTOMY! ⁣ Show up for us, it’s time. ⁣ ⁣ #plannedparenthood #stoptheban #abortion #womensrightsarehumanrights
