Stephen King’s The Mist Headed To TV

Looks like another big screen horror tale is set to be revived in a small screen format, as word breaks that ‘The Mist’ is to become a TV series.

As has been widely reported today, Dimension Television are developing the series, reportedly with the blessing of Stephen King, author of the original novella on which director Frank Darabont’s 2007 movie was based.

With a cast including Tom Jane and Marcia Gay Harden, ‘The Mist’ centres on the people trapped in a small town supermarket when the world outside becomes enveloped in (guess what) a mysterious mist, bringing with it hideous monsters - and, so it would seem, the end of the world.

Noted for its bleak, realistic tone and soul-destroyingly downbeat ending, the film was only a moderate box office success for Dimension Films, grossing $57 million worldwide off an $18 million budget.

However, it quickly garnered a fervent cult following and is now generally regarded as one of the very best Stephen King adaptations - not unlike Darabont’s earlier films ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘The Green Mile.’

Interestingly, given the movie had a fairly decisive ending, ‘The Mist’ is pitched as a continuing series, and is being developed by Danish writer Christian Torpe.

In a statement, Dimension’s Bob Weinstein says, “The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth.

“With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.”

There is no indication that either Stephen King or Frank Darabont will be involved in the series.

Dimension have recently enjoyed small screen success with another adaptation of one of their big screen properties, MTV’s ‘Scream: the Series.’
