Starship Troopers reboot in the works

The bugs are back - ‘Starship Troopers’ is getting a reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 1997 cult sci-fi classic is getting the reboot treatment, with a new movie which will go back to the original novel.

“Columbia Pictures is rebooting Starship Troopers, the 1997 science fiction film directed by Paul Verhoeven,” they revealed. “The studio has tapped Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing duo behind the upcoming Baywatch movie, to write the script for a new theatrical feature film that would relaunch a potential franchise.”

Of course, ‘Starship Troopers’ received mostly negative reviews on the film’s release and managed a depressing $121 million at the global box office based on a production costing $105 million. A very slim profit margin, then.

But the film’s glib tone and satirical humour grew to become appreciated.

The film currently holds a 63% rating at review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes and is highly regarded amongst sci-fi fans. But apparently, the new movie won’t be based on the original film, instead taking inspiration from the ‘Starship Troopers’ novel.

“The studio is not remaking the film but is said to be going back to the original Heinlein novel. No personnel from the 1997 film are involved.”

Of course, the original novel was a rather controversial read. ‘Starship Troopers’ by Robert A. Heinlein is often criticised for its glorification of the military, as well as extremely right-wing motivations.

Will the ‘Starship Troopers’ reboot take a cutting, satirical approach like its predecessor?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it could be the perfect time to reboot.
