When it comes to love and romance in K-dramas, there are certain stereotypes or tropes which tend to be a little fantastical.

For director Kim Ga Ram, the series Nevertheless, which is based on a popular webtoon, is all about a realistic portrayal of love.

We were at a press conference at the launch of Nevertheless, which is currently streaming on Netflix, and the director and cast shared their thoughts on the drama.

"Romance is an extension of our daily lives, but I want to convey something that really happens in real life. A lot of dramas focus on the fantasy of romance. When I saw the webtoon, I really truly related to the despair and bitterness of romance, which is what differentiates our series from others," said director Kim.

Nevertheless is a a romance K-drama adapted from the popular Naver webtoon and based on the budding romance of two young university art students. Yoo Na Bi (Han So Hee) is a university art major who just got out of a toxic relationship, and Park Jae Eon (Song Kang) is the strikingly handsome fellow she falls in love with after a chance encounter in a bar. It turns out that he is also an art major in the same faculty.

Kim said, "Despite what that you know, you still end up doing something else (in a relationship). You know you’ll be hurt. If you fall for someone you might be abandoned, and he or she might leave you. Nevertheless, you still fall in love. So in spite of the pain and the hurt, this is the story of those who risk themselves to jump into love."

Actress Han So Hee, who plays Yoo Na Bi, agrees wholeheartedly with director Kim.

"Everyone who’s ever been in love knows what you have to go through when you’re in love. Some viewers might reminisce when they were in love or some may start falling in love, so focus on love or that ambiguous feeling when you’re watching our series," said Han.

Both director and cast members spoke glowingly of the natural chemistry that the leads showed while acting.

"I wanted to act instinctively and I didn’t want to actively manipulate my emotions, so I just focused on being on the set. the contrast between Song Kang’s real life personality and his character made him even more charming; the energy he brought to the set brightened everyone up and I could really act my best,'' said Han.

"So Hee has a very flexible attitude and whatever I threw at her during our scenes, she would receive it very well," said Song Kang. "Our chemistry can be described as a great friendship; we could relate to each other as people of the same age."

"They really got into their roles which made me feel like a viewer instead of a director. I was confused as to whether it was improv between actors or from the script, because their chemistry was so natural," said director Kim.
