When we think of Starbucks, obviously the baristas’ personal style isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. We’re so busy kicking ourselves for missing out on a free iced tea (don’t leave home without that Sampler loyalty card!) and finding a cozy spot to plug in our laptops; the employee uniforms are probably the last thing we notice. But now that Starbucks is changing its uniforms, we suddenly find ourselves with a rather strong interest in what the baristas wear to work.

What’s the big deal? Well, the company recently updated its dress code and some of the changes are rather interesting.

As it turns out, Starbucks is pretty selective when it comes to what the baristas are allowed to wear under their green aprons. According to the company’s “Dress Code Lookbook,” sweatshirts, hoodies, and basically every T-shirt you own are deemed “distracting under the apron.”

OK, cool. Whatever. But then they go and get all weird on everyone by basically suggesting that baristas step up their hipster headwear game.

“Top off your look with beanies, fedoras and other suitable hats in brown, gray or black, making sure they’re clean and free from snags.”

But seriously, a fedora?! For why though, Starbucks?

But before we go all the way in on Starbucks for their on-the-job fedora fangirling, let’s revisit why the baristas will probably just shrug and keep it moving in the face of the updated dress code. The company just announced a five percent raise for Starbucks employees, plus they offer full tuition reimbursement for all US employees and they’re one of the few businesses that provides insurance coverage for part-time employees.

That said, on the scale of “I hate my job so much, I’d rather jump out of an airplane than continue working here” to “Yay! This is my dream job, life is perfect!” we’d say the barista gig (fedora requirement included) is still pretty decent.
