Star Wars: The Force Awakens May Have Featured Rey’s Parents

Rey’s parents may have been in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ after all…

It’s no secret that Rey’s origins in ‘Star Wars 7’ are a little murky. After all, she was left alone on a desolate planet to fend for herself… and she has no idea who her parents might be.

But while fan theories have joined the dots to various iconic ‘Star Wars’ characters, director J.J. Abrams recently blew many of them away – stating that her parents were not in the film.

“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII,” he revealed. “So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”

But it seems that may not be entirely true…

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams clarified his recent comments about Rey’s family… and revealed that they could have been in the film after all.

“What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII,” he said. “Not that they may not already be in her world.”

According to EW, the director then explained that he was only trying to point out that ‘The Force Awakens’ builds up the mystery of Rey’s parents without resolving it. But apparently, we got the wrong end of the stick…

Of course, J.J’s earlier comments would have ruled out Han and Leia as the leading character’s parents – completely debunking a popular theory that she may be the sister of the film’s main villain, Kylo Ren.

Or perhaps she’s the long-lost daughter of Luke Skywalker…

Either way, it looks as though those theories could be back on the table. But who really are Rey’s parents? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is out on DVD and Blu-ray from 18 April 2016.
