'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Blu-Ray/DVD Release Set for April
Your Blu-ray player is about to awaken.
During its annual shareholder meeting on Thursday, Disney announced that its money-printing blockbuster sequel Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released on digital home video on April 1, and on DVD/Blu-ray on April 5. The J.J. Abrams-directed flick — the first Star Wars movie released since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 — has earned $2.05 billion at the worldwide box office over the winter, including a record $926 million in the United States.
The box office was aided by many fans visiting the theater over and over to see the triumphant return of the original cast and the introduction of new stars that include Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and Adam Driver. Now those superfans will have the chance to watch the movie on an infinite loop. The Blu-ray and DVD release will also feature a bundle of special features that highlight the film’s production.
The features include a making-of documentary; a video recording of the first cast table read; a short doc about the building of new droid hero BB-8; a feature about the construction of the movie’s many new alien creatures; an interview with composer John Williams; a look at the special effects lab at ILM; and, of course, deleted scenes.
Several retailers, including Target and Best Buy, will carry Blu-rays with even more extra features.
