Star Wars: Rogue One won’t have an opening crawl

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ won’t have that iconic opening crawl.

It’s the first of Disney’s ‘Star Wars’ spin-offs, and rumour has it that it won’t feature the iconic summary at the start of the movie. Now, Outer Places seems to have confirmed it - the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ spin-off won’t feature an opening crawl.

“A few days ago, we happened to have a conversation with someone in the know about certain aspects of Rogue One,” they explained. “While we were talking about the typical Star Wars opening crawls, the source (whom we consider to be extremely credible) revealed to us that Rogue One actually opens in a way ‘different than the classic Star Wars films’…”

But that’s hardly surprising.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story isn’t your run of the mill ‘Star Wars’ film. It may not be the first ever ‘Star Wars’ spin-off, but it’s the first produced by Disney… and it’s clear that these new ‘anthology’ films are completely separate to the main saga.

Of course, the opening crawl has been the iconic opening for all of the main ‘Star Wars’ saga movies. But as a film which exists outside of the main saga, it makes sense that ‘Rogue One’ (and presumably the Han Solo spin-off) would make do without the crawl.

And then there’s the comments by Lucasfilm boss, Kathleen Kennedy.

“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl,“ she explained to ETOnline. “I think that’s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.”

And while director Gareth Edwards was a bit more vague about the matter, it seems like a safe bet that ‘Rogue One’ will be a different kind of ‘Star Wars’ movie.

“I think basically there’s a lot of things that I probably can’t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that,” he joked. “The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films… the whole crawl of it all – it’s funny people are fascinated on that.”

Both Kathleen Kennedy and Gareth Edwards dropped some pretty heavy hints that we won’t be seeing an opening crawl in ‘Rogue One’. Now with this new ‘rumour’ seemingly backing it up, it seems we’re in for a crawl-less ‘Star Wars’ movie this December.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
