First 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' clip launches jet troopers into battle

It’s not just a Skywalker on the rise in Episode IX, as Stormtroopers will also be strapping on jet packs and taking to the air too.

Disney has launched the first full clip Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (watch it above) showcasing an action sequence from the final film in the Skywalker saga.

It sees Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac), Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), BB-8, and Threepio (Anthony Daniels) in a high speed chase on the desert planet of Pasaana.

The resistance crew are riding aboard two flying speeders when a First Order trooper spots them escaping (he calls them “fugitives” interestingly), dispatching two Treadspeeders to follow them in hot pursuit.

The vehicles then dispatch two jet troopers riding pillion, into the air to offer aerial support.

“Argh, they fly now!” Threepio trills with surprise, with Finn and Poe repeating the line in confirmation.

The jet troopers are a new addition to the franchise and were first revealed to the public at Disney’s D23 Expo in August this year.

The specialised First Order jet trooper is a unique design that incorporates nods to original trilogy concept artist Ralph McQuarrie and the death troopers from Rogue One.

“The jet pack is implemented as part of the armor, which is a bit unique,” Madlyn Burkert, Lucasfilm’s collections and exhibitions archivist, told StarWars.com.

The jet troopers are not the only new troopers in the film, as the red Sith troopers will also be making their debut when the film lands next month.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker launches in UK cinemas on 19 December. Tickets are on sale now.
