It’s official: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are no longer directing the standalone Han Solo movie.

A statement from the duo reads:

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are truly proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”

Variety reports that the pair’s departure in the middle of production comes after months of clashing with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and co-writer and executive producer Lawrence Kasdan, among others.

Lord and Miller are known for penning and producing hit blockbuster comedies filled with irreverent humour like 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, and were hired to bring their distinct energy and a tongue-in-cheek treatment to a galaxy far, far away.

But according to a source quoted by Variety, it was a “culture clash from day one”. Lord and Miller were shocked to find that they were not given the kind of creative freedom they had enjoyed on their previous films. Whereas Kennedy and Kasdan, who have been in the Star Wars gig for a very long time (Kasdan’s involvement goes way back to Empire Strikes Back), questioned their directing choices. Kennedy especially didn’t approve of the pair’s shooting style and the way they interact with the actors and the crew.

A spokesman from Disney declined comment other than to say that the film is still slated for a May 25, 2018 release in the US. Kennedy says in a statement: “Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew but it became clear that we had different creative visions on this film and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.”

The spin-off will focus on Han’s early days as a smuggler and takes place 10 years before the events of A New Hope. Alden Ehrenreich has taken on the iconic role while Donald Glover will be playing the young Lando Calrissian. The cast also includes Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newton.

What do you make of this shocking news, geeks?
