Star Wars Episode 8: There may be more than one last Jedi. Wait what!
When it was first announced that Star Wars Episode VIII would be titled The Last Jedi, the fandom went wild speculating who this last Jedi might be.
Is it Rey (Daisy Ridley), who was revealed at the end of The Force Awakens (see our review) to be a true prodigy of the Force? Or is it Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)? Cast your minds back to Return of the Jedi, where Yoda said on his deathbed that Luke would be the last one. The opening crawl in The Force Awakens also refers to Skywalker as “the last Jedi”.
“But wait!” cried one corner of the fandom. “Isn’t the word Jedi like sheep or deer, that is, they’re pronounced and spelled the same way both in their singular and plural forms?”
And so a worldwide investigation into the semantics of the title was launched. Thanks to many international posters bearing translations of “The Last Jedi” in their respective languages, we now know that the “Jedi” in the title is indeed PLURAL.
French title:
The French title for the next Star Wars movie ("The Last Jedi") in English is "Les derniers Jedi" — so plural. https://t.co/wcbztCMXgc

Because of how the Germans use grammar, we now know that "Jedi" is plural in "The Last Jedi". Vielen Dank. pic.twitter.com/QupIQb4K8X

They've translated "The Last Jedi" into Spanish as "Los Ultimos Jedi" using the plural. So that that as you will. #starwars

Italian:
So this is veeeeery interesting. The Italian translation of “The Last Jedi” indicates that it’s meant to be read as plural. pic.twitter.com/fsQgbvChuF

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsThe likes of French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian modify their adjectives to distinguish the quantity, as well as the gender, of the nouns they’re modifying. So yes, it could very well refer to both Rey and Luke now. And who knows? There may be more in hiding – maybe they’ll eventually emerge to do battle with the Knights of Ren. The possibilities are plural!
Meanwhile, we also have our very first look at Episode 8’s Poe, Rey and Finn via a photo used on Star Wars merchandise packaging for this year’s Force Friday. See below:
They all look so badass especially Rey! Is it December yet?!
