Star Wars 8: Don’t Expect Romance Between Finn And Rey

Finn won’t get the girl in ‘Star Wars 8’… at least, not the one you expect.

During an interview with Variety, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ star John Boyega hinted that we won’t see Finn and Rey hook up in ‘Star Wars 8’.

“I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in [Star Wars 7],” he explained. “We never played it that way. Daisy and I, we’re friends. Finn and Rey – they’re just friends.”

“Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on,” he explained. “So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next instalment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.”

And that definitely feels like the right move.

Throughout ‘The Force Awakens’, the relationship between Finn and Rey grows ever stronger. But they don’t really feel attracted to each other. Yes, there’s a throwaway line when Finn asks Rey about her boyfriend… but perhaps he was barking up the wrong tree.

I mean, give the guy a break – this is the first girl he’s met since he quit stormtrooping.

And then there’s Rey’s put downs.

Clearly, she’s not interested in Finn, at least, not in that way. She admires his resolve and his determination to do the right thing… but even their most tender moments feel more like two very close friends. And perhaps that’s a good thing. After all, not every main character needs to find themselves in a budding romance.

But that doesn’t mean love isn’t in the air.

Boyega said it himself: “It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.” And that could mean the unlikely internet pairing between Finn and Poe is on the cards. On the other hand, we might find some of our favourite characters meeting all new love interests in the upcoming sequel.

But for now we’ll have to wait and see.

Either way, Finn can probably stop asking if Rey has a boyfriend.

‘Star Wars 8’ heads to cinemas on 15 December 2017.
