According to ‘Star Wars 8’ director Rian Johnson, the upcoming sequel will head back to Luke Skywalker’s remote hideout… after all, everyone wants to know exactly what happens next.

“I wanted to break a long-standing ‘Star Wars’ tradition. And for the first time, this movie is going to start right were the last one left off,” he said during the Future Filmmakers panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe. “It’s like – I don’t want to skip ahead. That last moment in VII, I want to see what happens next.”

“And so, because of the demands of the story, that’s what it ended up being,” he added. “Which meant that we went back to Skellig and we were only able to get a couple of days shooting there. It was months before we started principal photography so it was really the first stuff that we did.”

Of course, ‘The Force Awakens’ ended with Rey heading off on a mission to find Luke Skywalker… and as she holds out his iconic lightsabre, the scene dramatically ends.

Thankfully, it looks as though the next movie will follow directly on.

And this time around, we get to delve even deeper into the new characters, and find out exactly what makes them all tick.

“[The] second film is where we start zooming in on the characters and getting to the heart of them, challenging them, and pushing them deeper,” he said.

‘Star Wars 8’ sees the return of John Boyega as Finn, Daisy Ridley as Rey and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron. They’ll be joined by ‘Star Wars’ legends, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher as General Leia.

Rian Johnson directed ‘Star Wars 8’ based on his own screenplay.

‘Star Wars 8’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2017.
