New ‘Star Trek’ TV Series Gets Official Title

CBS’ new “Star Trek” series is officially “Star Trek: Discovery,” it was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con Saturday.

The “Discovery” is named after the new ship where the show is set, the U.S.S. Discovery (NCC-1031).

The announcements were made at a special 50th Anniversary “Star Trek” panel at Comic-Con, moderated by “Star Trek: Discovery” showrunner Bryan Fuller.

The new series will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network in early 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the network’s digital subscription video on-demand and live streaming service. The new “Star Trek” series marks the first original series developed for CBS All Access.

The next chapter in the “Star Trek” franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

“Star Trek: Discovery” will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Alex Kurtzman‘s Secret Hideout, Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman, Fuller and Heather Kadin will all serve as executive producers along with Roddenberry and Roth.

“Star Trek Beyond” is now in theaters.
