"Squid Game" was rejected for ten years before becoming a hit

8 Oct – Although his series, "Squid Game" has become a megahit on Netflix, Korean director Hwang Dong-Hyuk recently admitted that there was a time that the premise of the show joined the rejection piles of many producers.

The director, who sat down for an interview recently, stated that he actually completed writing the script of the series in 2008, but couldn't get it into production following the many rejections from investors and actors for the "weird" script.

"There were a lot of people who told me that it was a project that was weird and too unrealistic," he said, indirectly saying that the script was ahead of its time.

"But after about 12 years, the world has changed into a place where such peculiar, violent survival stories are actually welcomed. People commented on how the series is relevant to real life. Sadly, the world has changed in that direction. The series' games that participants go crazy over align with people's desires to hit the jackpot with things like crypto currency, real estate and stocks. So many people have been able to empathise with the story," he said.

He also seemed to have a change of heart about a sequel, which he previously said might not come anytime soon.

"I've been telling people how we can't make the second season right away. But since so many people love the series, it sort of does feel like I can't say that I won't do it," he added.
