"Squid Game" director Hwang Dong-Hyuk wins at Emmys

13 Sep – Hwang Dong-Hyuk became the first Asian director to win in the director category at the Emmy Awards 2022.

The South Korean director bested contenders that include "Succession" directors Mark Mylod, Cathy Yan and Lorene Scafaria, as well as Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Ben Stiller ("Severance") and Karyn Kusama ("Yellowjackets") to win for his work on the Netflix series, "Squid Game".

"Since Squid Game got nominations at the Emmys, people keep telling me I made history, but I don't think I made history by myself," Hwang said in his acceptance speech. "I have to say, we all made history together."

At the same time, Hwang stated that he hopes that the "Squid Game" series will not be the last non-English series to be nominated at the Emmys nor that it will be the last of him winning the awards.

It is noted that Hwang is currently working on season 2 of "Squid Game".
