Who are the top drivers and teams in the Monaco Grand Prix?
After winning three races on the trot, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has taken the lead of the world drivers championship with 110 points, six ahead of Ferrari’s Charles LeClerc (104) and 25 in front of teammate Sergio Perez (85). LeClerc, who races under the Monegasque flag, is BetMGM’s favorite to claim Monaco’s all-important pole position (-110) and for the race win (+100).
LeClerc took pole on his home circuit in 2021 only to be denied the chance to race due to a crash later in the qualifying session. The Monegasque has started on the front row in all six rounds of the 2022 championship so far as the Ferrari — especially in his hands — has had the one-lap pace edge over Red Bull, while race reliability has swayed in the direction of the RBPT.
Red Bull lead the constructors’ standings with 195 points, 26 ahead of Ferrari (169) and 75 ahead of a seemingly resurgent Mercedes (120).
What will the weather be like for the Monaco Grand Prix?
Variable. Friday’s free practice sessions look to be contested under warm, humid conditions while thunderstorms and rain are possible for Saturday and Sunday. Rain on either day would liven up what is typically a processional of a grand prix in two ways.
With car design and engine regulations for 2022 especially, teams depend on the data they get from practice sessions. If the conditions are drastically different from Friday to Sunday, teams have less data to rely on, making for varying strategy options.
The more obvious point is that a rainy grand prix — even in Monaco — is wildly unpredictable, sometimes producing winners from very deep on the starting grid.
