Sony is still considering whether a movie featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat can work without the inclusion of Spider-Man, according to director Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Silver and Black was announced by Sony in 2017 and was due to be set within the world established in Spider-Man: Homecoming, albeit it without Tom Holland’s Spider-Man due to the character’s MCU commitments.

That universe has since been established with Venom and the upcoming Morbius movie, but news on Silver and Black has been scant.

Prince-Bythewood is currently promoting her Netflix comic book movie The Old Guard and told GamesRadar that she’s unsure about the current status of Silver and Black.

"I really love those characters, I loved having them together,” she said.

The filmmaker added: “I thought, what we came up with was a really good, really organic way to have the two together.”

The Love & Basketball director added that Sony’s landscape is “changing so much” as a result of the billion-dollar success of the Spidey collaborations with Marvel.

She added: "There's a question of: 'Can you really have these films with Spider-Man not in them? Should he at least have some sort of part in them?'

“That's always the question. I've taken two years off of that for [The Old Guard] so once this gets out into the world, I hope it's a success, and then I'll certainly go back and start talking with them again."

After the $856m (£686m) global success of Venom, Sony is moving forward with several projects adjacent to Spider-Man and speculation is mounting about a potential Sinister Six team-up.

Both Silver Sable and Black Cat have served as allies for Spider-Man in the comics, though both have moral complications.

Black Cat was previously referenced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with Felicity Jones playing Felicia Hardy — the character’s alter ego.

Jones said last year that she would love the chance to go back to the character if she were ever given the opportunity.
