Someone translated the “Lion King” introduction song — and it’s, well, not what we expected

We never thought this day would come. Finally, after all these years, a human angel has translated the intro song of The Lion King, and we can’t get over what it actually means. Okay, so you should know first that the lyrics are sung in Zulu. A Tumblr thread, which has been verified by Buzzfeed, Genius.com, and Refinery29, has translated the words for us. But if you’re expecting to read a profound lyric, similar to the depth of “The Circle of Life,” you’ve got another thing coming.

“Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba / Sithi uhm ingonyama” translates to “There comes a lion / Oh yes, it’s a lion.”

Are you laughing yet? We don’t blame you if you are. To think that this quintessential childhood movie kicked off with a song that actually means “Hey, there’s a lion coming, guys” puts us in a weird position. It’s funny, yet wildly devastating all at the same time.

I mean, hey, at least the writers of the soundtrack know how to keep a theme going.

Turns out some of us are a little late to the party. People on Twitter from a few years ago had a few things to say about this anti-climactic translation.

Hopefully, this doesn’t ruin your childhood experience of The Lion King. I doubt it will, though, because, you know, Hakuna Matata!
