Skinny Cakes: Satisfy your sweet tooth cravings with guilt-free desserts by Boon Keng MRT

I frequent Boon Keng very often. And every time I walk past, I am hit by a wafting presence of chocolate aroma and fragrant bakes. Every single time without fail, I look with eager eyes resisting my urge to grab a bake. Trust me when I say that I face tremendous difficulty rebelling against my sweet tooth because, in the end, you would find me situated in the store choosing my next cake to try. Situated just on the left of Boon Keng MRT (Exit A) sits Skinny Cakes— a small bakery selling low-sugar dessert options.

On most days, the friendly store assistant inside the store would call out to you to welcome you into the store, asking if you’d like to take a look at its bakes. Most of the time, I fall into the trap. Its vibrant signage has an alluring appeal, and I am embraced by its comforting and no-fuss interior.

Peeking from right to left, what presents is its compelling U-shaped display of cake selections, followed by their yoghurt muffins and their home-baked brownie cookies. It’s as if the bakes are giving you one big delicious hug— a chocolate-smelling one at that too. The whole seamless experience of selections is quite captivating. As a customer who frequents bakeries, I don’t see bakeries that are smaller in size that are as organised as they are.

A brown wooden panel behind hides their in-house bakery, and they have their walls decorated with quotes that encourages your purchase. One includes: “Less sugar ’cause you are sweet enough”. Thanks for being a supporter of my love for sweets.

Joey, the owner, shared about her inspiration behind Skinny Cakes. Specialising in bakes that focus on health, they provide a myriad of options that satisfy your daily sweet-tooth indulgence without compromising on quality and taste.

What I tried at Skinny Cakes

Baffled by the wide array of selections, I opted for their best-selling cakes: the Flourless Chocolate Mousse (S$6.90), Ondeh Ondeh (S$6.80), Japanese Rare Tofu Cheese (S$5.90), and Raspberry Rose Cream Cheese (S$6.90).

Let’s start off with my favourite, the Flourless Chocolate Mousse.

Enrobed in a luxurious layer of Valhorna dark chocolate, the Flourless Chocolate Mousse has a smooth velvety texture, with a sprinkle of raspberry bits that neutralises the chocolatey taste. Upon my first mouthful, the cake melted into a rich divine chocolate taste. It left me feeling guilt-free, and this is something that I have never experienced with chocolate cakes. I think this is an experience I can’t even put into words.

If you believe that one’s chocolate cake should not be too sweet, then this is the one for you. With no added sugar and flour, its sweetness is only derived from the natural flavours of the chocolate. If you’ve tried Chocolate Origin’s Dark Chocolate Cake, this has a hint of semblance to it. It’s rich in flavour and steals your heart upon first bite.

Moving on to their Ondeh Ondeh Cake, an option loved by the older generation and those who are patriotic to local flavours. Alternating between layers of gula melaka Bavarian cream and a pandan-based sponge cake, it is topped off with toasted coconuts flakes for that added texture and coconut flavour.

I tried eating this cake like how I do with my kueh lapis. Layer after layer, I was surprised by how it wasn’t overpoweringly sweet. Skinny Cakes really does keep its word by making guilty-free options indefinitely leaving me guilt-free.

Next, I had the Japanese Rare Tofu Cheese Cake! Looks can be deceiving when your cake literally looks like silken tofu. Plot twist! The cake is indeed made out of 50% real tofu, so no wonder it looks exactly the same.

My first bite gave me the impression of cold beancurd. It was only seconds after that the notes of cheese came in. Taste wise, it’s not exactly cheesy as the tofu subsides the creaminess of how cheese would usually be.

The jelly-like layer above the sponge cake was silky smooth, like a hybrid of agar agar and normal cheesecakes. Much less creamier as compared to all the cheesecakes out there, this serves as a lighter version for many who might find cheesecakes too heavy for your liking!

Last but not least, the Fresh Lemon Tart (S$6.90). Its gorgeous piping sets it up perfectly for Instagram stories. However beautiful it might look on the outside, the inside is not deceptive and it tastes absolutely delicious as well.

Every bite contained a balance of flavours between sweetness and tanginess. As it’s made out of real lemons (inclusive of its lemon skin), Skinny Cake’s smooth lemon curd wasn’t overly cloying or sour. As for the crust, it acted perfectly as an outer layer to give the tart a great bite. Like cookies that are simply addictive, this tart left me wanting more!

Final thoughts

This picture commemorates my pure ecstasy after bringing home a box of these cakes. If you know me well, I enjoy desserts with a passion. And very shortly after I brought these home, on the very same night, I demolished it all. Skinny Cake’s whole spread doesn’t lack in taste, and they are all much lighter options in comparison to typical desserts, making it very easy to eat!

All in all, it is amazing how Skinny Cakes is able to retain the taste of authentic flavours with the incorporation of real ingredients instead of flavourings or additional and unnecessary sugar. They show how indulging in desserts should not leave you feeling guilt-ridden or make you want to count your calories.

Skinny Cakes, you have gotten yourself a loyal customer.
