Singaporean jazz singer Joanna Dong’s first single since her performance at Sing! China last year will be released this Friday (2 March).

The 35-year-old was one of five contestants who made it to the Chinese reality singing competition’s grand finals held at Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium in October. She was knocked out in the first round of the finale, after a duet with her mentor Jay Chou as well as a solo song.

“Long Way Round” will be launched on various online platforms including Youtube, iTunes and Spotify.

Penned by accomplished Singaporean lyricist Chen Jia Ming with an original melody by composer Ruth Ling, the song is a reflection of Joanna’s sentiments during her Sing! China journey.

Her aptly titled third single will be accompanied by a music video which speaks to her finding success at a later stage in her career.

In a media statement released on Tuesday (26 February), Dong said, “When Chen Jia Ming asked me what I would like the song to be about, the first thought was how thankful I am to have gotten a big break in my career, and because success happened later for me, it tasted even sweeter.”

Joanna’s latest single is a labour of love between four producers and nine musicians helmed by Red Roof Records. “Long Way Round” is arranged by acclaimed arranger Mac Chew, whose extensive repertoire includes stars like Sandy Lam, Karen Mok and Eason Chan.

“It was serendipitous that I came to hear about the wedding of a real-life couple who found love again late in life,” Dong said.

She described the song as being about the journey to finding love with detours.

“That’s the spirit I want to share: waiting doesn’t refer to staying put at one spot, but being patient whilst you’re on the road. Keep walking, and either you will find happiness, or it will find you,” Dong added.
